Dear Friend,
Publishing a book is very much like giving birth to a baby and the publisher is the midwife or a parent. A book is born with the union of two entities, there are pains during, the relief when the baby is out, and the anxiety after…. It is an act of hope, faith and often, courage. You don’t know if the baby will be born with all ten fingers or not spastic, similarly, how ever many times you have proofed the book, you do not know if you have missed the odd one, you don’t know if the font is appropriate, you don’t know if the book will do well in the market.
Now that it is over two weeks since the first set of books are out, friends ask us what our marketing strategy is since we do not have deep pockets, how do we ensure that the second set of books to be released in October will be flawless, what kind of books are going to constitute the third set, and of course, there are very many who caution/compliment us for starting this when most of our team have crossed sixty years of age.
Meanwhile, while we are marketing our first set of books, work on the second set of books is going on apace. Gharana by Suresh is our first novel, In the Footsteps of the Buddha/The Buddha in My Backyard (which one is better?) is a travelogue in the backyard of Rani Sarma, the first volume of Hyderabad Readings will raise issues of 1948 and what it means for Hyderabad and Telangana, for Hindus and Muslims, for federalism, Understanding ‘Fascism’: Writings on Class, Caste and the State by our very own Balagopal will analyse a caste-class centric view of fascism. Our fifth offering in this set is Dr. A.P. Ranga Rao’s memoir, A Doctor's Calling. Right now, we’re working furiously on proofing, copy-editing, planning endorsements and approaching 'influencers'.
Cover design planning will be next. Too many infants in the house?
